What is laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a surgical technique whereby an instrument similar to a telescope is inserted
into the abdominal cavity through a small incision. The abdominal organs can then be inspected
using this scope.
Additional small incisions can be made to allow instruments to be inserted so
actual surgical procedures can be done. A wide variety of surgical procedures can be performed with this technique, including:
- gall bladder surgery
- hiatus hernia surgery
- exploration
- liver biopsy
- bowel resection
The advantage of this techniqwue is that there is much less pain
after surgery because incisions
are smaller, allowing a quicker return to normal activity.
Is laparoscopy as reliable as traditional surgery?
In recent years, major advances in the technology of instrument and
video camera manufacture have allowed surgeons to perform many
processes via laparoscopy which formerly would have been done via an incision in the abdomen.
