Hernia - FAQS
What is a hernia?
A hernia is a weakened area in the muscular wall of the abdomen or the groin. Older patients get them more often than younger patients, and men more often than women.

Why is surgery necessary?
The danger is that a portion of an organ from the abdominal cavity may become trapped in the wakened area.

How urgent is a hernia operation?
Many times surgery is done on an elective basis. If an organ is trapped in the hernia or if it is very painful surgery becomes more urgent.

How is a hernia fixed?
Surgery is done to repair the weakened area. This can be sewn or reinforced with a mesh made of synthetic material.
Two approaches for hernia repair are used:

  • In the conventional approach a 2-3 inch incision is made in the groin
  • In the laparoscopic approach several incisions are made to introduce a scope and instruments.
These incisions are much less painful and are significantly smaller in size.

Do I have to stay in the hospital?
No. This surgery can be done on a "same-day" basis.
