Biopsy - FAQS

The mention of the words "breast biopsy" may alarm many women. A breast biopsy is actually a sampling procedure by which tissue is obtained to determine the presence or absence of cancer. A sample of tissue is removed and then sent to the pathologist for analysis. In most instances a benign (non-cancerous) diagnosis is returned. A biopsy can be done using a variety of approaches. In some instances a tissue sample can be obtained utilizing a needle. In other cases, a small incision in the breast may be necessary to remove the sample of tissue. In some instances a combined approach, using sonography and mammography, may be required.

How long does the procedure take?
The procedure may take between fifteen and sixty minutes, depending on the method used.

What sort of anesthesia is used?
In many cases the procedure is done under local anesthesia.

Can I go back to work the next day?
Recovery is quick with a return to normal activity within twenty-four hours in most cases.

Why do I need a biopsy?
While imaging techniques such as sonography and mammography provide good information about the presence of a malignancy they are not completely accurate. A tissue sample will distinguish between benign lesions, such as fibroadinomas or cysts, which may mimic a malignancy.
